Meet Henry

Miracle Story

Henry Meyerd
At just five years old, Henry from South Dakota is already showing the world what courage and resilience look like. He has a boundless spirit, a curiosity that drives him to climb on just about everything, and a smile that lights up every room he enters.
From the moment you meet him, Henry’s spark is unmistakable. He is adventurous, easygoing, and always on the move. But Henry’s journey has been anything but easy.
Henry was born with achondroplasia, the most common form of dwarfism, which is caused by a mutation in the FGFR3 gene. Children with this condition often face a variety of health challenges, and Henry was no exception. Soon after birth, doctors discovered he had foramen magnum stenosis, a dangerous narrowing at the base of the skull that can press on the brainstem and spinal cord. This condition, together with sleep apnea and feeding difficulties, led to severe developmental delays. At one point, Henry could not even sit up on his own.
When Henry’s doctors realized how critical his situation had become, they arranged an emergency medical flight to Delaware, where specialists performed a delicate surgery called foramen magnum decompression. The procedure relieved pressure on his brainstem, giving him the chance to survive and grow.
The surgery was successful, but it was only the beginning. Henry needed ongoing follow-up care at a skeletal dysplasia clinic, hundreds of miles from home. Each return trip required his parents to find a way to travel long distances while juggling the emotional and financial strain of raising a child with complex medical needs. That is when they found Miracle Flights.
“Miracle Flights truly provided a miracle for our family,” Henry’s mom recalls. “Among the stress of dealing with our son’s medical needs, they graciously assisted with travel home.”
Since then, Miracle Flights has been with Henry’s family every step of the way. Each trip to Delaware brought them closer to healing, and each mile flown gave Henry the chance to become the vibrant little boy he is today.
Henry has gone from being severely delayed and needing oxygen to being unstoppable. He runs. He climbs. He eats everything in sight. And most importantly, he smiles.
“Being able to access the right care changed Henry’s life and ours,” his mom says. “It was heartbreaking to know our child was not getting what he needed. Now, we watch him thrive.”
Henry’s story is a reminder of what is possible when families are not held back by distance. Thanks to the generosity of Miracle Flights supporters, Henry and children like him have the chance to reach the medical care that can change everything.
From all of us at Miracle Flights, thank you for helping families like Henry’s keep flying toward brighter tomorrows.
