Henry was born in February 2020, a bright and joyful child with an infectious laugh and a curious spirit. Now a kindergartener, he loves playing soccer and basketball with his siblings, winning family games of Uno, and exploring the world with a sharp mind and quick wit. To those who meet him, Henry is pure joy.
But behind that joyful smile is a heart journey that has required courage, faith, and access to specialized care far from home.
Henry was born with a congenital heart defect, also known as a CHD. Congenital heart defects are structural problems of the heart that are present at birth and affect how blood flows through the heart and body. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, congenital heart defects affect nearly 1 in every 100 babies born in the United States each year, making them the most common type of birth defect. The American Heart Association notes that children with complex CHDs often require surgery, specialized treatment, and lifelong follow-up with pediatric cardiology experts.
For Henry, this meant major medical interventions early in life, including two open-heart surgeries, as well as continued monitoring by specialists who understand both his condition and his future.
Henry’s family lives in Kansas, where access to world-class pediatric cardiac care is limited. To receive the specialized expertise Henry needs, they travel to Boston Children’s Hospital, one of the nation’s leading pediatric heart centers, widely recognized for advanced cardiac care, research, and compassionate treatment.
Traveling hundreds of miles for medical care is not simple. Between coordinating appointments, navigating changing care plans, and managing the cost of airfare, the burden quickly became overwhelming. Like many families facing serious childhood illness, Henry’s parents found themselves worrying not only about his health, but also about how they would get him the care he needed.
That is where Miracle Flights stepped in.
Thanks to Miracle Flights, Henry and his mom were able to fly to Boston and back for critical medical appointments. When their care plan changed unexpectedly and Henry’s scheduled surgery was postponed after his pre-operative evaluation, the Miracle Flights team responded with flexibility, compassion, and understanding.
“We were so thankful that Miracle Flights helped us get there and back and were so understanding of the change of plans,” Henry’s mother shared.
The news itself brought relief and gratitude. Henry’s heart looked better than expected, offering hope the family had been praying for.
“We have been praying for a miracle. Miracle Flights was such a blessing. The cost involved was great, and Miracle Flights made that burden so much less. It was a blessing that we are so thankful for.”
And as an added joy, Henry loved the experience of flying, especially sharing the adventure with his mom and Skyler.
For Henry, access to Boston Children’s Hospital means access to specialists who understand his heart, his growth, and his long-term needs. Their expertise has helped guide his recovery from major surgeries and continues to support his ongoing care.
Today, Henry is thriving. He is a happy, active kindergartener surrounded by family, laughter, and possibility. His journey is not over, but because of Miracle Flights, distance is no longer a barrier to hope or healing.
