About Miracle Flights
For more than four decades, Miracle Flights has helped children access specialized medical care by providing free commercial air travel to treatment destinations across the United States. Our mission removes distance as a barrier to care so children can reach the specialists and treatment they need, regardless of where they live.
The Opportunity
Miracle Flights is bringing financial leadership in-house after utilizing a fractional CFO model. The Chief of Finance will serve as the organization’s senior financial leader and a strategic partner to the CEO, executive leadership team, and Board of Directors, with responsibility for financial stewardship, strategy, accounting, reporting, budgeting, compliance, treasury, investments, internal controls, and long-term financial sustainability.
The incoming leader will build the internal Finance function, including recruiting and directly managing a Finance Manager. This role requires an executive who is both strategic and hands-on: equally comfortable advising the CEO and Board on long-term financial and investment decisions and ensuring disciplined, accurate day-to-day financial operations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Serve as the principal financial advisor to the CEO and a key member of the executive leadership team.
- Lead short- and long-term financial planning and evaluate the financial implications of strategic priorities, programs, fundraising initiatives, capital needs, and organizational growth.
- Lead annual budgeting, multi-year planning, rolling forecasts, cash-flow projections, scenario analysis, and financial modeling.
- Monitor financial performance and communicate significant trends, structural variances, risks, opportunities, tradeoffs, and recommended actions.
- Develop sustainable reserve, liquidity, capital, and funding strategies that support mission delivery and organizational resilience.
- Translate complex financial information into clear, decision-useful guidance for executives, committees, and Board members.
Accounting, Reporting & Financial Operations
- Provide executive oversight of the general ledger and monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll oversight, cash activity, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Ensure timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP applicable to nonprofit organizations.
- Ensure appropriate revenue recognition, expense classification, functional expense allocation, and reporting of donor-restricted and unrestricted net assets.
- Develop useful management reporting, including department, program, grant, special event, budget-to-actual, cash-flow, and key performance reporting.
- Develop, document, maintain, and consistently apply accounting policies, procedures, close schedules, review standards, approval authorities, and segregation of duties.
Nonprofit, Fundraising & Grant Stewardship
- Provide financial oversight for individual contributions, corporate and foundation philanthropy, grants and contracts, sponsorships, in-kind contributions, and other restricted and unrestricted resources.
- Ensure donor restrictions, grant conditions, gift agreements, board designations, and other funding limitations are accurately documented, monitored, released, reported, and honored.
- Oversee the financial aspects of the grant lifecycle, including proposal budgeting, award review, allowable-cost guidance, monitoring, reporting, closeout, record retention, and audit readiness.
- Partner closely with the Chief of Philanthropy and program leaders to support gift acceptance, fundraising revenue recognition, donor stewardship, grant compliance, and informed use of philanthropic funds.
- Ensure accounting records reconcile appropriately with donor management and CRM systems and that required financial reporting is provided to donors, foundations, corporate partners, and grant-making organizations.
Investments, Reserves & Treasury
- Provide financial leadership for the organization’s significant investment portfolio, reserves, cash, and other financial assets.
- Partner with the CEO, Finance & Investment Committee, Board, investment managers, custodians, banks, and advisors to evaluate performance, fees, risk, liquidity, asset allocation, and available alternatives.
- Support development, implementation, and periodic review of investment, spending, reserve, and liquidity policies.
- Oversee accurate accounting and reporting for investment income, realized and unrealized gains and losses, fees, contributions, withdrawals, and related activity.
- Oversee banking relationships, lines of credit, treasury activity, cash forecasting, and liquidity management.
Board, Audit, Tax & Compliance
- Serve as the primary financial liaison to the Board of Directors in partnership with the CEO.
- Prepare and present financial statements, forecasts, dashboards, analyses, and recommendations to the Board and relevant committees.
- Support the Finance & Investment Committee and Audit Committee and participate in other Board committees as appropriate.
- Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors and lead annual financial statement audit preparation, schedules, management responses, and remediation of findings.
- Oversee preparation and review of Form 990 and other required federal, state, payroll, charitable registration, and tax-related filings.
- Own the Finance function’s compliance calendar for financial, tax, charitable-registration, banking, audit, and other recurring finance-related filing requirements; ensure deadlines, supporting documentation, professional review, and evidence of completion are maintained.
- Provide financial oversight for banking administration, deposits, authorized access, payment controls, and related records, with day-to-day execution delegated appropriately to the Finance Manager.
- Monitor compliance with accounting, donor, grantor, contractual, tax, regulatory, and organizational requirements and maintain audit-ready records.
Internal Controls, Systems & Risk
- Design, implement, monitor, and continuously improve a right-sized internal control framework over financial reporting, cash receipts, disbursements, payroll, procurement, grants, restricted funds, investments, budgeting, and cash-flow management.
- Maintain appropriate approval authorities, access controls, documentation, reconciliations, fraud- prevention measures, and segregation of duties.
- Oversee financial systems and related platforms, including accounting, reporting, expense management, banking, payroll, and donor systems.

- Manage relationships with external auditors, tax professionals, investment advisors, banking partners, and other financial service providers.

- Strong knowledge of GAAP applicable to nonprofit organizations, financial reporting, audit preparation, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and cash management.
- Substantial experience with nonprofit accounting, donor-restricted and unrestricted funds, charitable contributions, fundraising revenue recognition, grants, gift agreements, and philanthropic compliance.
- Experience leading or directly managing annual external audits and supporting Form 990 and other regulatory filings.
- Experience with investment assets, treasury management, banking relationships, liquidity planning, and collaboration with investment advisors or governing committees.
- Experience presenting financial information, risks, forecasts, and recommendations to executive leadership and Boards or Board committees.
- Advanced Excel skills and demonstrated ability to use financial systems and technology to strengthen analysis, reporting, controls, and efficiency.
