Keona’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. At just four weeks old, she was diagnosed with shaken baby syndrome, leaving her in a coma for a month with two broken legs at New Orleans Children’s Hospital. Yet, despite these heartbreaking circumstances, Keona’s story didn’t end there. Instead, she was given a second chance at life when she was lovingly adopted into a family in Louisiana, where she finally found the care and support she desperately needed. Due to the prolonged time she spent on life support, Keona required a tracheostomy (trach) to help her breathe, which led to significant scarring near her voice box. However, Keona’s life took a turn for the better in 2015, when her path crossed with Dr. Sohit Kanotra. Just two years later, at 18 months old, Dr. Kanotra performed a groundbreaking surgery to rebuild Keona’s airway, enabling her to finally speak. For Keona, this was nothing short of life-changing—a voice, a new beginning.
When Dr. Kanotra moved from Louisiana to Iowa in 2019 and later to Ronald Reagan UCLA Children’s Hospital, Keona’s family was determined to keep her under his care. Thanks to the support of Miracle Flights, Keona has been able to continue her treatment with the doctor she trusts and relies on. These flights are more than just transportation—they are a lifeline, allowing Keona to receive the consistent care she needs for her ongoing recovery. Now, at 9 years old, Keona is a vibrant, bubbly girl with an infectious smile. She has a passion for gymnastics and a dream of becoming a doctor one day. In May 2024, Keona took her fourth Miracle Flights trip to UCLA for a bronchoscopy with Dr. Kanotra. For Keona, each flight represents more than just a journey—it is a bridge to healing, a symbol of hope, and a reminder that her dreams are within reach.

Her mother shares, “Keona would be devastated if she couldn’t continue care with Dr. Kanotra. Thanks to Miracle Flights, she doesn’t have to worry.”

Keona’s story is a testament to resilience, love, and determination. With every flight, Keona is one step closer to a future as bright as she is. And with the support of Miracle Flights, she continues to soar.
