Spend just a few minutes with JosieMae and two things become immediately clear: her boundless energy and her joyful determination. She is a curious, spirited toddler who loves to explore the world around her. Although she is medically complex, nothing about her personality suggests slowing down.
From the outside, JosieMae looks like any other busy little one. Behind the scenes, her family has been navigating a rare and challenging diagnosis: Hirschsprung’s disease.
According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Hirschsprung’s disease is a rare condition present at birth that affects the large intestine and makes it difficult for children to pass stool due to missing nerve cells in the bowel. Without specialized care, it can lead to serious complications and a significantly reduced quality of life.
Living in Florida, JosieMae’s family worked tirelessly to find answers close to home. Multiple local hospitals attempted to treat her condition, but despite their efforts, JosieMae’s health continued to decline. Her parents knew she needed highly specialized care, even if it meant traveling far from home.
That referral led them to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio, home to one of the nation’s leading specialists in Hirschsprung’s disease.
One major question remained: how do you safely get a medically complex toddler across the country for care?
“Without Miracle Flights,” JosieMae’s mom shared, “I’m not sure how we would have gotten there.”
Through Miracle Flights, JosieMae was able to travel safely from Florida to Ohio and be seen by Dr. Wood, a leading expert in her rare condition. For the first time, her family felt truly heard and supported.
“Being a part of Miracle Flights is life-changing for our daughter and our family,” her mom said. “We can now access the top specialist for Hirschsprung’s disease without worrying about how to get from Florida to Ohio.”
At Nationwide Children’s Hospital, JosieMae received targeted testing and procedures designed specifically for her needs. A colon biopsy was performed, and Botox was administered to help relax her intestinal muscles, an option that had not been previously offered.
The early results have been encouraging.
“Her appetite has picked back up,” her mom shared, “and she is finally able to pass stool.”
For JosieMae, that progress means less pain, more comfort, and more energy to simply be a toddler. For her family, it means hope rooted in expert care and thoughtful treatment.
Since receiving support from Miracle Flights, JosieMae is thriving. She is more active, more comfortable, and showing clear signs of improvement. Just as importantly, her parents are finally receiving the answers they have been fighting for.
“We’re seeing so much progress,” her mom said. “They are running tests and doing procedures that are truly targeted to her rare disease.”
Being able to reach the right hospital did not just change JosieMae’s medical journey. It changed her family’s life.
“Our lives have changed by being able to provide the medical care she deserves,” her mom shared. “I’m unsure if we would be able to do that without Miracle Flights.”
For families like JosieMae’s, access to specialized care makes all the difference, and sometimes hope begins with a flight.
