Meet Ariana

Miracle Story

Ariana Feltes
Nine-year-old Ariana from Iowa is not just a survivor. She is a force of nature.
Curious, whip smart, and endlessly warm, Ariana has a gift for lighting up a room. Her mother smiles as she describes her daughter’s boundless curiosity: “She loves to ask questions. When she wants to know something, she really wants to know.” Ariana is also the kind of child who draws people in with kindness and makes fast friends wherever she goes.
Yet behind that bright spirit is a story of resilience. Ariana was diagnosed with cancer at a young age, and her doctors explained that she would need a liver transplant to survive. For her family, the news was devastating enough, but another obstacle soon followed: her home state of Iowa does not perform pediatric liver transplants. If Ariana were going to receive the care she needed, the family would have to travel hundreds of miles out of state.
That kind of distance brought enormous challenges. Flights, hotels, time away from work, and the strain of constant medical travel threatened to overwhelm the family. That is where Miracle Flights stepped in.
“Having the help of Miracle Flights has made our annual trip for her liver transplant evaluation so much easier,” Ariana’s mother explains. “We do not have to stress and worry about how to afford getting her to her appointments each year. It is one less thing we have to carry.”
Each year, Ariana travels for specialized post-transplant care that is critical to her survival. By providing free flights, Miracle Flights helps those miles disappear, allowing her family to focus on what matters most: Ariana’s healing.
According to the National Institutes of Health, outcomes for children like Ariana have improved dramatically in recent decades. Survival rates for pediatric liver transplants now exceed 90 percent at one year and remain above 80 percent at five years. In fact, between 1987 and 1990, only about 78 percent of pediatric patients survived their first year after transplant. By 2017, that number had risen to 95 percent. These advances demonstrate the vital importance of access to transplantation and consistent follow-up care for long-term survival. Ariana’s story is living proof.
Today, Ariana is thriving. Her transplant gave her not just more time, but the chance to live fully. She is healthy, confident, and dreaming big. Her family sees the change every day. “She is stronger and brighter,” her mom says. “The gift of a new liver gave Ariana the chance to experience life, her life, the way she deserves.”
Thanks to Miracle Flights, Ariana and her family no longer face impossible choices between finances and health. They can focus on milestones, laughter, and the everyday joys of childhood. Ariana’s journey shows what can happen when distance is no longer a barrier to care. It is a story of hope, science, and compassion working together. For every child like Ariana, Miracle Flights is more than just a means of travel. It is a bridge to life-saving treatment, a source of comfort, and a reminder that no family should have to face medical challenges alone.
Ariana is not only surviving. She is soaring.
