Meet Emmett

Miracle Story

At just six years old, Emmett from Riverdale, Utah, has endured more medical challenges than many will face in a lifetime. Born with a constellation of life-threatening conditions, including a congenital heart defect, chronic lung disease, a complex airway, and the need for a tracheostomy, his journey has been anything but easy. Yet it has also been defined by resilience, joy, and a spirit that refuses to be slowed down.
“He’s such an outgoing little boy,” his mom shares. “He absolutely loves being outside, playing in the dirt or water. Nothing, not even his trach or oxygen, holds him back.”
One of Emmett’s most urgent challenges stemmed from a growth that severely obstructed his right mainstem bronchus, the primary airway to his right lung. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), such airway obstructions in children with complex congenital conditions can lead to profound respiratory distress, fatigue, and developmental delays if left untreated. Emmett's mom remembers those difficult days when he needed frequent rest just to breathe.
“There’s nothing worse than watching your child struggle for every breath,” she says.
Determined to get him the specialized care he needed, Emmett’s family turned to Boston Children’s Hospital, one of the nation's foremost pediatric centers. But getting there wasn’t easy. As a single mother of four, the burden of cross-country travel—flights, accommodations, and time away from work—felt insurmountable.
That is when she discovered Miracle Flights.
“The support from Miracle Flights was more than a gift. It was a lifeline,” she explains. “It’s overwhelming trying to juggle finances and care for a medically complex child. Having our flights donated lifted a huge weight off my shoulders.”
Thanks to Miracle Flights, Emmett has traveled to Boston multiple times for evaluation, airway procedures, and eventually a complex surgery. The result is a transformation nothing short of remarkable.
“He’s now more active, more energetic. He doesn’t need to stop and rest all the time. He’s hard to keep up with!” his mom laughs. “We’re even hoping he won’t need oxygen at all soon.”
Emmett’s story is one of grit, growth, and gratitude. Today, this dirt-loving, bug-chasing little boy is finally able to enjoy the freedom of childhood—the kind that comes with the simple ability to breathe.
“We’re so incredibly grateful to be part of the Miracle Flights family,” his mom says. “They gave Emmett more than a flight. They gave him a future.”
