At just six years old, Emmett from Riverdale, Utah, has endured more medical challenges than many will face in a lifetime. Born with a constellation of life-threatening conditions, including a congenital heart defect, chronic lung disease, a complex airway, and the need for a tracheostomy, his journey has been anything but easy. “He’s such an outgoing little boy,” his mom shares. “He absolutely loves being outside, playing in the dirt or water. Nothing, not even his trach or oxygen, holds him back.”
One of Emmett’s most urgent challenges stemmed from a growth that severely obstructed his right mainstem bronchus, the primary airway to his right lung. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), such airway obstructions in children with complex congenital conditions can lead to profound respiratory distress, fatigue, and developmental delays if left untreated. Emmett's mom remembers those difficult days when he needed frequent rest just to breathe.
“There’s nothing worse than watching your child struggle for every breath,” she says.
Determined to get him the specialized care he needed, Emmett’s family turned to Boston Children’s Hospital, one of the nation's foremost pediatric centers. But getting there wasn’t easy. As a single mother of four, the burden of cross-country travel—flights, accommodations, and time away from work—felt insurmountable.
