At just 18 months old, Asher embarked on his first Miracle Flight to receive critical treatment for Grade 4 Subglottic Stenosis, a severe condition that caused a complete closure of his airway, leaving him tracheostomy-dependent. His journey took him from Las Vegas to Mass Eye and Ear in Boston, Massachusetts, a world-renowned Harvard teaching hospital specializing in complex airway reconstruction.
For Asher’s parents, the experience of flying with their medically complex child was daunting. However, with the support of Miracle Flights, they were able to reach Boston seamlessly, ensuring Asher received the specialized care he desperately needed.
“We just returned home to Vegas from Boston, where our son underwent a bronchoscopy with an ENT specializing in airway reconstruction,” said Asher’s mother, Becky. “The entire experience, from start to finish, went perfectly. This was our first time flying with our medically complex baby, and we could not have asked for a better outcome.”
The results of Asher’s evaluation were life-changing—he was deemed an ideal candidate for airway reconstruction surgery, a procedure that would not only provide him with a safe, functional airway but also give him something his family had never experienced: a voice.
“We have never heard Asher’s voice—not a single coo or babble. Even when he cries, it is completely silent. The opportunity to give him a better quality of life and ensure his condition is no longer life-threatening is beyond words. This would not have been possible without the assistance of Miracle Flights.”
On September 4th, Asher underwent airway reconstruction surgery at Mass General in Boston. Over the course of four hours, his surgical team successfully removed rib cartilage and placed a rib graft to open his airway. The procedure was completed without complications, marking a significant milestone in his journey toward independent breathing and vocalization.
Following his surgery, Asher made remarkable progress. He began experimenting with new foods, a milestone in his recovery. But the most emotional moment came just weeks later—on September 23rd, his mother shared a video titled “Look who has a voice!”
Asher’s journey is a testament to the life-changing impact of access to specialized medical care. Without Miracle Flights, his path to healing would have been impossible. Through this support, Asher is no longer defined by silence—he is finding his voice, his strength, and a future full of possibilities.
